It's the long-awaited successor of the Nikkor AF 85mm f1.8D from 1994 and the considerably more affordable sibling of the AF-S 85mm f1.4G from August 2010 - see my Nikon 85mm f1.4G review for more details on that high-end model. It can also be considered the longer companion to the AF-S 50/1.8G from April 2011. This design finds balance between a lightweight, compact form factor while also being fast enough to effectively control depth of field and suit working in low light.
